Goal:
We’ve been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but lots of kids struggling with hunger don’t get it, even if it’s available at school, because they may be embarrassed that classmates know they don’t have food at home. Help reinforce that breakfast is the most important meal of the day for ALL students by creating a hallway mural that kids can sign pledging they will eat breakfast. Title it: “Fuel up with breakfast. And soar through your day like a rocket ship!” for elementary school children or “Eat smart to play hard. Fuel up with breakfast.” for middle and high school kids. Consider adding: “What is your favorite breakfast fuel?” to both age groups and have students write their favorite breakfast food next to their signature.
We also encourage you to find ways to make the cafeteria a fun place to be in the morning for all students – especially in middle school and high school where despite being hungry, many students don’t take advantage of free and reduced priced breakfast. Have a talented parent? Have them come and play music, tell jokes or just play age appropriate CDs.
